Staff Only: Policy and Procedures on Field Safety
Policies and procedures for LEME staff working in the field
were prepared by one of our core parties - Geoscience Australia
- in consultation with the OH&S representatives of other core
parties. They have been endorsed by the LEME Board, and are presented
here for your guidance.
These policy and procedures have been developed to promote best practice and safety awareness for all staff and students working in the field on LEME projects. They do not supplant the requirements stipulated by the host organisations, but prescribe minimum procedures where they may not be stipulated by the host agency.
The information is presented in the two linked Word documents on
FIELD SAFETY POLICY
Policy and Procedures on Field Safety (1MB) , and
GLOVEBOX GUIDE
- an abridged manual called Glove Box Guide to Health and Safety in the Field (646kb).
The documents cover such topics as:
- Health in the field
- Environmental hazards
- Vehicle safety and driving
- Communications
- Personal protective equipment
- Camp and field safety
It is emphasised that all LEME people have a personal obligation
to be familiar with, and observe, the OH&S policies and procedures
of their host agency.
Some essential components of LEME policy are:
- A journey plan, as prescribed by the agency, must be filled
out and lodged with the officer in charge of the agency, before
undertaking field work in remote or outback areas; that plan will
show proposed itinerary, overnight locations, methods of daily
reporting, and hazard assessment. A proforma plan is attached
to the main document.
- All people who drive a 4-WD vehicle, must have basic off-road
driver training from an accredited provider.
- All staff and student must report all incidents and accidents,
as prescribed by the agency.
- All reports on accidents and incidents made to the employing
agency will be actioned by that agency, but must be relayed to
LEME headquarters for our record keeping.
