OPEN FILE REPORT 201

Laterite geochemical database for the southwest Yilgarn Craton, WA

Matthias Cornelius, Paul Morris, Amanda Cornelius

LEME Laterite Atlas Project

Leader Matthias Cornelius. Full Project Details under Research Section, Program 2.

A collaborative project funded and supported jointly by the Minerals and Energy Research Institute of WA (MERIWA), Geological Survey of WA, CSIRO Exploration and Mining and CRC LEME.

Derived from laterite sampling, the Interim Report (Laterite Geochemical DB) from this Project has provided new regional information about the geochemistry of the wheatbelt, which can be used for mineral exploration and land management.

Major new geochemical trends and anomalies have been identified. Some results suggest there is potential for gold and base-metal mineralisation outside the known greenstone belt areas of the southwestern Yilgarn Block. The Laterite Geochemical DB provides a regional geochemical framework at a spacing close enough to recognise regional geochemical trends, major rock types and dispersion halos around significant mineralisation.

The Final Project Report (Laterite Atlas) is planned for release mid 2007 and will include a complete evaluation and interpretation of the data.
